چکیده

• Stimulation of potassium (K) efflux by sodium (Na) has been the subject of much recent attention, and its mechanism has been attributed to the activities of specific classes of ion channels. • The short-lived radiotracer K was used to test this attribution, via unidirectional K-flux analysis at the root plasma membrane of intact barley (Hordeum vulgare), in response to NaCl, KCl, NH4Cl and mannitol, and to channel inhibitors. • Unidirectional K efflux was strongly stimulated by NaCl, and K influx strongly suppressed. Both effects were ameliorated by elevated calcium (Ca). As well, K efflux was strongly stimulated by KCl, NH4Cl and mannitol , and NaCl also stimulated NH4 + efflux. The Na-stimulated K efflux was insensitive to cesium (Cs) and pH 4.2, weakly sensitive to the K-channel blocker tetraethylammonium (TEA) and quinine, and moderately sensitive to zinc (Zn) and lanthanum (La). • We conclude that the stimulated efflux is: specific neither to Na as effector nor K as target; composed of fluxes from both cytosol and vacuole; mediated neither by outwardly-rectifying K channels nor nonselective cation channels; attributable, alternatively, to membrane disintegration brought about by ionic and osmotic components; of limited long-term significance, unlike the suppression of K influx by Na, which is a greater threat to K homeostasis under salt stress.

Exogenously supplied compatible solutes rapidly ameliorate NaCl-induced potassium efflux from barley roots.

It has been suggested that the role of compatible solutes in plant stress responses is not limited to conventional osmotic adjustment, but also includes some other regulatory or osmoprotective functions. In this study, we hypothesized that one such function is in maintaining cytosolic K+ homeostasis by preventing NaCl-induced K+ leakage from the cell, a feature that may confer salt tolerance in...

Salt Tolerance in Rice Cultivars and Changes in Sodium and Potassium Ions

Salinity is an environmental stress that limits growth and development in plants. Due to high salinity in Khuzestan soils it is necessary to identify cultivars with appropriate yield that are compatible with Khuzestan conditions. This experiment was done to evaluate three rice cultivars for salinity tolerance at seedling stage by measuring the absorption of sodium and potassium ions and the rat...

Activation of Inward Rectifier Potassium Channels in High Salt Impairment of Hydrogen Sulfide-Induced Aortic Relaxation in Rats

Introduction: Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) plays a key role in the regulation of vascular tone and protection of blood vessels against endothelial dysfunction. Since the mechanism of salt impairing H2S-induced vascular relaxation is not fully clear, therefore this study was designed to investigate the role of potassium (K+) channels in the vasodilatory effects of exogenous H2S in rat aortic rings.&nb...

Induced salinity tolerance and altered ion storage factor in Hordeum vulgare plants upon salicylic-acid priming

AbstractThis study was undertaken to better understand the probable mechanisms of salt stress tolerance induced by seed priming of salicylic acid (SA) in barley. The barley seeds were pre-soaked by SA or water and then sown under different saline watering regimes including 0.62 (tapwater), 5, 10 and 15 dS m-1 in petri dishes and trend of water absorbing, seedling growth, germination rate and pe...
